REGINA — An American senator is suggesting that he and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have been misled about the success of a carbon capture facility in Saskatchewan.
Sen. Joe Manchin says the facility at the Boundary Dam power plant near Estevan has failed to operate successfully for any meaningful period of time.
The facility was supposed to reduce CO2 emissions from the coal-fired power plant by one million tonnes annually, but has only removed 400,000 tonnes so far this year.
Manchin says many of the glowing performance results for what is really a troubled project are based on what he calls "marketing spin and hyperbole.''
Manchin is from the coal-producing state of West Virginia and has long promoted the importance of carbon capture technology.
The senator met with Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall last year to talk about the facility at Boundary Dam, but that was before reports started surfacing about troubles at the carbon capture complex.
