Powerful winds knock power out for nearly 56,000 BC Hydro customers

VANCOUVER — Gale-force winds have cut power for about 56,000 BC Hydro customers in southern British Columbia.

The utility says nearly 34,900 customers have lost electricity due to 74 outages across the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast.

It says strong winds have caused numerous outages in the Fraser Valley.

On southern Vancouver Island, another 21,300 customers are affected by 51 separate outages.

BC Hydro says the severe weather is causing significant damage in the Victoria and Duncan areas.

The utility says its crews are assessing the damage and working to restore power.
