Calgary Uber drivers will find out Friday if they will be able to resume operations.
The city has applied for a temporary injunction against the company. The application named a total of 57 Uber drivers.
"We have been contacted by a number of individuals who have voluntarily agreed to stop driving for Uber,” said Colleen Sinclair, a lawyer for the city, in a media release. However, if the injunction is overturned, the drivers could end up right back on the street.
The issue will be addressed in a full day of hearings at the Calgary Court of Queen's Bench.
Provincial and city officials have been attempting to block Uber over issues of insurance. Uber has told drivers that their personal insurance, paired with the company's coverage, is sufficient, but the city disagrees, saying that unlicensed vehicles put passengers at risk due to lack of regulation.
"I strongly suggest that you don’t drive for Uber and that you don’t use Uber until the insurance and regulatory issues are sorted out. If you drive for Uber, you should be aware that you are breaking the law," Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said in a statement last month.
The injunction, if passed, would stop Uber from operating until the city has time to discuss an amendment to the vehicle-for-hire bylaw in February.
In the meantime, taxi supporters and fans of Uber will be waiting with bated breath.
