A mosque in east-central Alberta is once again cleaning up after being vandalized for the second time in a year.
The words "go home" were scrawled on Cold Lake Mosque's door sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, according to the Edmonton Journal. "Catch me if you can" was scribbled inside a nearby CIBC ATM.
"This attempt to intimidate Muslims in our community will not be tolerated," wrote Fort McMurray-Cold Lake MP David Yurdiga in a Facebook statement. “The perpetrators of this crime don’t seem to understand that the Muslims in our community are just as at home as everyone else."
Police are reviewing video from nearby locations and have asked the public to come forward with any information.
Residents react with kindness
Cold Lake RCMP had recently met with mosque representative Mahmoud El-Kadri shortly after the Paris attacks to reassure him Mounties would be ready if it needed any assistance, Sgt. Jeremie Landry told the Bonnyville Nouvelle.
At the time, Landry said he did not expect the mosque to be targeted again.
Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland told the Edmonton Sun he's “very disappointed" with the vandal.
On Sunday, Cold Lake residents were quick to support the mosque once again.
Boxes of cupcakes were dropped off at the mosque's door with a note reading, "We are sorry for the ignorance of some who hurt your mosque... we think you are a wonderful addition to our country, our province, our neighbourhood."
In October 2014, the mosque was spray-painted with the same "Go home" phrase, and the building's front windows were smashed.
After last year's vandalism, the community banded together to scrub away the graffiti and fix the broken windows with signs reading "Love your neighbour."
