Google Pays Homage To Author L. M. Montgomery On Her 141st Birthday

Happy 141st birthday, L. M. Montgomery!

It's always a pleasant surprise to see what Google's doodle has in store on any given day, but it's even better when (a) it's a Monday morning and (b) they're honouring L.M. Montgomery, one of the world's most beloved authors.

The P.E.I.-born author, who would have been 141 on Monday, is best known as the creator of the Anne of Green Gables series, books that continue to resonate with generations today. She also wrote many short stories and poems throughout her life, and was the first female in Canada to be named a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in England.

Explaining their choice, Google noted one of their illustrators, Olivia Huynh, is a big fan of Montgomery, and she went out of her way to recreate some of the author's most iconic scenes from her books with drawings, like the one where Anne bakes a cake using medicine instead of vanilla from the original novel:

Anne, who Mark Twain called “the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice,” has resonated with readers around the world, which is why Google decided to showcase the doodle in 20 countries.

Montgomery was born in New London, P.E.I., and lived on the island until 1926, when her family — including her husband and two children — moved to Ontario. She died in Toronto in 1942.

Check out Google's page today for the full illustration, and spend a minute remembering your favourite scene from the books (we're inclined toward the slate smashing one).
