Blue Jays Ace David Price Signs With Red Sox For 7 Years, $217 Million

For the big old price tag of $217 million for a seven-year contract.

Ace pitcher David Price is leaving the Toronto Blue Jays and signing a 7-year, USD$217-million contract with divisional rivals the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Globe reported on Tuesday.

The deal makes Price one of the highest-paid pitchers in baseball and is larger than the deal the LA Dodgers signed with Clayton Kershaw in 2014 (seven years at USD$215-million).

Price came to Toronto in a mid-season deal with the Detroit Tigers in 2015 and quickly helped anchor the Jays' pitching rotation, helping propel the team to its first playoff berth since 1994.

Jays fans everywhere were probably echoing Marcus Stroman's reaction to the deal:

Stroman also managed to get a dig at his soon-to-be former teammate.

And then, like a good honourary Canadian, he showed his soon-to-be-ex-teammate some love:

In the few short months in Toronto, Price became a fan favourite and the pitcher expressed his admiration for the fan base and the city.

As the post-season auction for Price’s talents heated up, Blue Jays even created the site “Any Price For David”, where fans could list mostly silly things they would pony up if their team signed the leftie.

Price started went 9-1 in 11 starts for the Jays this year. We’ll miss him, his weird obsession with popcorn and his dog, Astro.
