BabyCenter has released its list of Top 100 Baby Names of 2015 and it’s no surprise that old favourites have managed to stay on top. Sophia and Jackson are the reigning baby names again this year, holding the top spot for the sixth and third year in a row, respectively.

According to BabyCenter, names tend to maintain popularity for three to five years. “It takes a little time to wake up to the idea that there may be too many Sophias in every class,” BabyCenter editor-in-chief Linda Murray told Yahoo Parenting.

Interestingly, Sophia, and its variation Sofia, was also named the most popular baby name in the world this year. According to baby name expert Laura Wattenberg, this is because the name is easy to pronounce and crosses so many languages and cultures.

Murray, of BabyCenter, agreed. “Sophia has been a powerhouse for six years, thanks to the variety of spelling options and the multi-ethnic, multi-language appeal of the name,” she said. “I predict Jackson's popularity will be more fleeting. We'll likely have a new number-one boys' name next year.”

To determine the most popular baby names of 2015, BabyCenter looked at more than 340,000 monikers that registered site users gave to their children this year. They also combined the names that sound the same, but have different spellings, such as Sophia and Sofia, or Jackson and Jaxon.
