Canadian dollar, U.S. markets advance; TSX, oil price lower

TORONTO — The Canadian dollar advanced and the Toronto Stock Exchange fell back Friday morning.

The Canadian dollar was 0.12 of a cent at 75.09 cents US.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX index fell 34.8 points to 13,289.87. That Follows Thursday's 139-point decline 

The Dow Jones average of 30 stocks was up 175.91 points at 17,653.58, the broader S&P 500 index advanced 16.48 points to 2,066.10 and the Nasdaq gained 39.8 points to 5,077.33.

On the commodity markets, the February gold contract rose $23.40 to US$1,084.60 an ounce, the January crude contract was down $1.18 at US$39.90 per barrel and the January contract for natural gas was up one cent at US$2.19.
