Over the decades many have stared into the eyes and smile of the Mona Lisa, but none as thoroughly as French scientist Pascal Cotte.
According to the BBC, the scientist has analyzed the painting over the span of 10 years with reflective light technology, and has discovered that a different portrait lies beneath the layers of paint.
While the actual identity of the Mona Lisa has been a long-running debate, many believe the woman to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk merchant. Cotte says his findings suggest otherwise as he claims the image underneath is Lisa, while the one that we all know is a different woman.
The Louvre, which displays the Mona Lisa, has declined to comment on the claims but has said Cotte's research "was not part of the scientific team."
