OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Five things to know about Burkina Faso, the West African country where six Canadians were killed in a terrorist attack that ended Saturday:

Population: 17.4 million

Demographics: 45 per cent of the population is 14 years old or younger, and the median age of the population is 17

Languages: Burkina Faso was a French colony until 1960, so the country's official language is French, but 90 per cent of the population speaks local languages

Head of State: President Roch Marc Kabore, came to power less than a month ago — on Dec. 29, 2015.

Relations with Canada: Canada is the largest foreign investor in Burkina Faso, and has been since the country's gold mining boom in 2008.
