Pianist Chick Corea heads up Newport Jazz Festival lineup

NEWPORT, R.I. — Pianist Chick Corea will be celebrating his 75th birthday this summer with his all-star trio at the nation's oldest jazz festival.

Newport Jazz Festival producer George Wein (ween) announced the lineup on Tuesday. He says there will be more than 50 musicians and bands performing July 29-31 in the Rhode Island seaside resort.

Corea's Trilogy includes bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade. The Trilogy and vocalist Gregory Porter will share the bill at the July 29 concert at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and will appear again July 30 at Fort Adams State Park.

Among those making their Newport festival debuts will be Los Angeles-based saxophonist Kamasi Washington, who emerged from obscurity with his three-CD album "The Epic" and as a key contributor to Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-nominated "To Pimp a Butterfly."
