Surprise! Tyra Banks is a mom. On Wednesday night, the former “America’s Next Top Model” host announced on Instagram that she and boyfriend, Norwegian photographer Erik Asla, had welcomed a baby boy. Banks confirmed to People that they had their son, York Banks Asla, via gestational surrogate.
“The best present we worked and prayed so hard for is finally here,” the new mom wrote on Instagram. “He’s got my fingers and big eyes and his daddy Erik’s mouth and chin.”
The 42-year-old has always been a private person and even kept her baby news a secret from coworkers on her former talk show “FABLife.”
“We're all talking about it now but we can't figure out how it was kept a secret,” one source told ET.
Banks previously opened up about her fertility struggles on the show, after her co-host Chrissy Teigen discussed her difficulties in getting pregnant.
After admitting that she had undergone IVF treatments, the former model reiterated Teigen’s sentiment that you never know what people are going through.
“For any women, it is none of your business what somebody is going through,” she said. “Whether they want to have a child or don't ever want to have a child or may have a child on the way, it's none of your business, okay? Until somebody wants to make it your business.”
Despite her fertility struggles, Banks told People in a statement: “The journey to now has not been an easy process, as I've shared before. But there was a beautiful bright light at the end of the tunnel for me and his father, Erik.”
York is the first child for Banks and boyfriend Asla. The couple has been together for two years, NY Daily News reports.
This isn’t the first time a celebrity has surprised us with a baby announcement. Back in August, Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced out of the blue that he had welcomed a son with wife Tasha McCauley. Similarly, that same month, Lucy Liu surprised us when she revealed that she had a son, Rockwell, via gestational surrogate.
