Zika Virus Sparks Debate Over Abortion Laws In Brazil

As the Zika virus spreads, concerns over the birth defects associated with the ailment have increased, causing a group in Brazil to petition the country’s Supreme Court to give more access to legal abortion. Currently, abortion is illegal in Brazil, except in the case of rape or to save a woman’s life.

Since late October, Brazilian officials have found 4,180 suspected cases of microcephaly (an underdeveloped brain) in babies, which has a possible link to the Zika virus. Learn more about this birth defect here.
