Some elective surgeries to resume next week after stains found on equipment

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Some elective surgeries that were postponed because of stains found on sterilized surgical kits at Newfoundland and Labrador's largest health authority will take place next week.

Eastern Health says 94 procedures are scheduled for Monday after more than 500 elective surgeries were delayed this week.

The authority says it hasn't yet determined the source of stains on its surgical kits.

Eastern Health's Dr. Oscar Howell says stains were found on towels that surgical instruments are laid on top of.

Emergency surgeries are continuing, and the health authority is flying instruments to Toronto for sterilization.
