Montreal wants to name more streets, parks after women

The City of Montreal wants the names of its streets, parks and municipal buildings to reflect the contributions made by women to the city's history.

Toponym'Elles is a new name bank created by the city where the names of 375 prominent women will be gathered as part of Montreal's 375th anniversary in 2017.

The initiative will address the lack of diversity when it comes to the names of public spaces, according to the city. Women make up only six per cent of 6,000 place names in Montreal, while men represent more than 50 per cent.

Montrealers are invited to submit suggestions of prominent women to the city.
