Former New Brunswick cabinet minister wants provincial Tory top job

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. — A former cabinet minister in New Brunswick is running for the leadership of the provincial Progressive Conservatives.

Blaine Higgs, the Tory legislature member for Quispamsis, announced his candidacy Thursday during a news conference in his riding.

Higgs was first elected in 2010 and was finance minister in the government of former premier David Alward.

He joins Fredericton area legislature member Brian Macdonald in the race for the party's top job.

The leadership convention is set for Oct. 22 in Fredericton.
