NewsAlert: Fire on First Nation community kills several people, say police

PIKANGIKUM, Ont. — Police say there's been a fatal house fire on the Pikangikum First Nation in northwestern Ontario and several people have died.

Const. Diana Cole says multiple people perished and several more are missing, but wouldn't provide any specific numbers.

Cole says the fire broke out shortly before midnight on Tuesday in the remote community near the Manitoba-Ontario border that's been plagued by suicides.

She says the blaze took place at a single home on the reserve.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police remain on the scene of the blaze.
