5 people escape house fire in North York, cat dies

Toronto firefighters knocked down an overnight blaze in North York that's left five people displaced from their home and killed a cat.

Fire crews were called to a house on Patricia Avenue near Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue just after midnight after receiving reports that a woman was outside yelling "house on fire."

Upon arrival at the home, fire officials say that crews saw heavy smoke coming from the basement and quickly knocked down the fire.

All five residents of the house had already escaped from the building safely. Firefighters removed a cat from the house and tried to revive it on scene, but it succumbed to its injuries.

The Red Cross was called to help residents find somewhere to stay.

Fire officials say they're still trying to determine the cause of the fire and how much damage was done to the house.
