Prom 2016: 5 Unconventional Looks To Flaunt At Your High School Farewell

Time to ditch those princess dresses for something a little unconventional.

There are two types of people in this world: those who love prom and those who hate it.

Look, we get it. Prom is a weird time of your life. A lot of people are sad to be leaving behind their ol' stomping grounds and childhood besties for the unknown of adulthood, while others are stoked to ~break free~ and start a new chapter of their life. It's all very stressful, really.

But here's what we know — prom comes with a lot of pressure. Which makes leaving high school even more stressful. For dudes, prom is a time to go tux shopping with mom, get a new pair of crisp dress shoes and pick out a nice little flower for their date. It's a battle, but they get the job done.

For the ladies, prom takes MONTHS to plan. You have to think about your hair, makeup, accessorizes, shoes and of course, the outfit. The outfit is so very important. You want something that stands out, you want something that you won't look back on and regret, you want something that will make you the belle of the ball. Heaven forbid you show up to your gala wearing the same princess-esque dress as another girl.

So here it is, five unconventional prom ensembles to help you leave your mark on your high school days:

If you're looking to make a statement in a big way, a jumpsuit may do the trick. Just like Gigi Hadid, you'll want your jumpsuit to fit in all the right places (it's your prom, allow your ensemble to fit your body beautifully rather than going for too loose of a fit). We also advise ditching the prints and going for a solid colour jumpsuit for a more refined look. If you want to take it to another level, then do what Gigi did and rock a metallic. This will make accessorizing your look easy and effortless.

Who said tuxedos are only for boys? If you really want to leave your mark on your school, show up to prom in a fitted and slim tuxedo, just as Emma Watson did in this Saint Laurent getup. They key to rocking menswear-inspired looks is to keep things simple — minimal accessories and a crisp white shirt will do. Because you're keeping things light with your suit, you can rock bolder makeup (like a killer lip or smoky eye).

A little midriff didn't hurt anyone, and that's why the crop top and skirt may be the winning prom combo you're looking for. Just like Kate Hudson showed us at this year's Golden Globes, the two-piece look is sophisticated with a side of sexy. We love how she paired the look with the accessory of the moment — the choker.

Forget about those tulle skirts. They're hard to maneuver and it makes going to the bathroom super difficult. Go for a silk dress with a modest slit to reveal a bit of leg, similar to what Rachel McAdams did on the Oscars red carpet (just don't go too dramatic because you don't want to violate any school dress codes). The look is great for those who are debating going for a short dress. It really is the best of both worlds.

Forget about those sweetheart necklines and opt for a long-sleeve gown with a higher neck and low-back. Basically, it's business in the front, party in the back. As Angelina Jolie showed us at the 2011 Golden Globes, if you're looking for something not too revealing, the long-sleeve look is perfect, especially with the higher neckline and structured shoulders (leave those corset bodices behind, ASAP.) If you want the extra drama, the low-back is exactly what you need for this ensemble.
