David Villa strikes twice as New York City FC pulls out victory over Whitecaps

NEW YORK — David Villa struck twice as New York City FC held on for a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.

Steven Mendoza scored the winner for New York City (2-3-4) in the 73rd minute, just 10 minutes after the Whitecaps tied the game at 2-2.

Christian Bolanos evened the game in the 63rd minute for Vancouver (3-5-2) with Octavio Rivero opening the scoring with a goal in the first minute.

NYCFC outshot the Whitecaps 16-14 with four shots on target. Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted managed just one save while his counterpart Josh Saunders made five saves.
