Quick on gender diversity terms and statistics

MONTREAL — The Liberal government introduced legislation Tuesday that would make it against the law to discriminate on the basis of gender identity or expression.

Here are some terms that pertain to gender diversity from a guide compiled by LGBT organizations The 519 and the Rainbow Health Organization:

Trans: An umbrella term that describes people with diverse gender identities and gender expressions that do not conform to stereotypical ideas about what it means to be a girl/woman or boy/man in society.

Gender-diverse: More and more, "trans" is being replaced by "gender-diverse" to acknowledge the linguistic and cultural limitations of "trans" as a word to describe all atypical gendered ways of being.

Transgender: Refers to a person whose sex assigned at birth does not match their gender identity.

Gender non-conforming/gender variant/genderqueer: Individuals who do not follow gender stereotypes based on their sex at birth. They may identify and express themselves as "feminine men" or "masculine women" or as androgynous, outside of the categories "boy/man" and "girl/woman."

Transphobia statistics:

The Canadian Mental Health Association says "trans people in both Canada and the U.S. report high levels of violence, harassment and discrimination when seeking stable housing, employment, health or social services."

The Trans PULSE Project, an Ontario-based research group, said in a 2014 study 20 per cent of trans Ontarians had been physically or sexually assaulted for being trans. Thirteen per cent lost their jobs for being trans and 10 per cent reported having emergency room care stopped or denied because they were trans.

A survey on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in Canadian schools and published by Egale Canada Human Rights Trust in 2011 showed that 74 per cent of trans students had reported being verbally harassed, with 25 per cent saying they were physically harassed.
