Alexandru Radita, Diabetic Teen, Was Denied Insulin: Doctor

The 15-year-old weighed under 37 pounds when he died.

CALGARY — A diabetic specialist has taken the stand at the trial of two parents accused of first-degree murder in the death of their 15-year-old diabetic son.

Dr. Daniele Pacaud testified that typical management of Type 1 diabetes includes visits to the doctor every three months, but Alexandru Radita never saw a doctor after the family moved to Alberta from British Columbia.

Court was also told the family didn't buy any insulin in the six months before Alexandru's death, even though a diabetic teen would require several doses a day.

Pacaud testified two electronic diabetic test meters found in the home had high readings and appeared not to have been used very often.

The trial has been told the 15-year-old weighed less than 37 pounds when he died in May 2013.

His parents, Emil Radita, 59, and Rodica Radita, 53, were arrested 10 months later.

An autopsy determined that the teen died from complications due to untreated diabetes and starvation.

Court heard Alexandru was covered in sores and was wearing a diaper at the time of his death.
