Crown not seeking jail time for 18-year-old guilty of sex assaults when a youth

RED DEER, Alta. — The Crown is not seeking jail time for an 18-year-old central Alberta man convicted of sexually assaulting teen girls between 2011 and 2015.

A judge in Red Deer found him guilty in January of three counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual touching of a minor.

Some of the assaults took place during trips with Scouts Canada and Cadets Canada.

During sentencing submissions Friday the Crown requested the man, who was a youth at the time, be placed on probation for two years.

The Crown also wants him to attend sex offender counselling, complete 200 hours of community service and have no contact with the victims except to write apology letters.

The judge wants time to review the submissions and is to hand down the sentence on July 15. (CHUB)
