Stock markets show modest gains, loonie down, oil little-changed

TORONTO — North American stock markets were showing modest gains this morning.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX index was up 34.16 points at 14,083.36.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 15.27 points at 17,843.56, the broader S&P 500 composite index advanced 3.83 points to 2,093.93 and the Nasdaq composite gained 16.71 points to 4,918.47.

The Canadian dollar was at 76.73 cents US, down 0.37 of a cent from Thursday's close at 77.10.

The July crude contract was down 33 cents at US$49.15 per barrel and July natural gas contract was up 1.4 cents at US$2.16 mmBTU.

The August gold contract was at US$1,213.60, down $9.10 an ounce and July copper contracts rose a cent to US$2.11 a pound.
