Vancouver police seek high-risk sex offender

Vancouver police said Friday in a statement that they are "hunting" high-risk sex offender James Patrick Benson after he fled the halfway house where he was staying.

Police say Benson, 36, is a two-time federal offender with a history of violent offences, including attempted murder and sexual assault with a weapon.

Benson was granted statutory release on Thursday and is serving a long-term supervision order with several conditions.

"He fled from his Vancouver halfway house and a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest," said police in their release. "James Benson has been the subject of a previous public warning by the VPD."

He is described as:

- Caucasian with brown hair and brown eyes

- Five feet 10 inches tall.

- Weighing 200 pounds.

Benson has several tattoos including the numbers 011707 on his left wrist, the word "MORBID" on his left forearm, "LOST SOUL" on his chest, and red stars on both shoulders.

Anyone who sees Benson is advised not to approach him, but to call 911 immediately.
