New Portrait Of The Queen And Prince Philip Released In Time For Their Birthdays

This love story is still going strong.

The Queen's actual birthday may have been in April, but nearly two months later we're still celebrating.

The Royal Family gathered on June 10 for the annual National Service of Thanksgiving, an event which kicks off the official start of celebrations for the Queen's 90th birthday.

Yes, that's right, the Queen has two birthdays. Despite being born on April 21, the Queen's birthday is officially celebrated on a Saturday in June when the weather is likely to be better. This year the Queen's birthday parade takes place on June 11.

Today's celebrations are extra special because they also mark Prince Philip's 95th birthday. To commemorate the special day, the Royal Family released a new portrait of the royal couple on their social media pages.

The photo was captioned with a quote from the Queen: "He has, quite simply, been my strength & stay all these years." In 2017 the Queen and Duke will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.

The key to the couple's long lasting relationship has often been credited to the support the prince provides the Queen. "The Queen wears the crown, but her husband wears the trousers," Royal biographer Gyles Brandreth says.

Prince Philip is also credited for his sense of humour, which Brandreth also notes is "the foundation for a good marriage."

According to a letter written by Her Majesty, the Queen fell in love with Prince Philip when she was only 13-year-old and he was a Greek prince and naval cadet. Seven years later, he proposed in Balmoral, before consulting with the King and Queen, and the then princess Elizabeth said yes.

More than 70 years later, it seems this love story is still going strong.
