Hockey fans in Canada were flabbergasted after the Montreal Canadiens dropped a bombshell on Wednesday, announcing P.K. Subban's trade to the Nashville Predators.
The star defenceman will be exchanged for Nashville's Shea Weber — a "dumb" trade that made little sense to many and triggered a wave of mixed feelings on social media.
The news of Subban's move came as U.S. President Barack Obama was preparing to deliver a historic speech in the House of Commons. Naturally, the two events quickly became connected and made for some hilarious quips on Twitter:
Although Obama didn't bring up Subban in his speech, he did talk about hockey.
"Our only battles take place inside the hockey rink," he said to the House. "Even there, there's an uneasy peace that is maintained."
As for Subban, the 27-year-old said he never wanted to leave the Canadiens, adding that it felt surreal when he heard the news.
"Listen, while I was a Montreal Canadien, there's nothing but fantastic times for me," he said. "I have to say that out of all the fan bases in the National Hockey League, the Montreal Canadiens' fans and community and the province of Quebec has probably embraced me more than any other player has felt in any other city."
