Mermaid Crowns Are The Stunning New Trend Replacing Flower Crowns

It looks like flower crowns really are getting replaced, and no, not by chokers, despite what Taylor Swift says.

Mermaid crowns are now all the rage thanks to Chelsea Shiels, a 27-year-old florist from Melbourne, Australia.

Using excess seashells from beaches and suppliers in Australia, India and Hawaii, Shiels creates ornate headpieces that are perfect for channelling your inner mermaid, according to Cosmopolitan. Smaller crowns usually use up to 20 shells, while larger versions can use up to 50. Each piece is adorned with chains, wires, strings of pearls and sometimes even Swarovski crystals, and takes a few days to make and set.

Chelsea originally started out by making and selling flower crowns, but one day decided to create a crown out of seashells instead.

"I've always wanted to be Ariel, under the sea," Shiels told "I'm a real beach bum. That was where my obsession with the sea and shells came from."

At first, she was hesitant to actually sell the mermaid crowns, because she was scared people would "think it was dumb to put shells on your head," but she eventually decided to share the magical creations with the rest of the world.

Now, business is booming for Chelsea, with customers in America and Europe purchasing her pieces.

"I took a risk and it seems to have paid off," she told Cosmopolitan.

Bad news is, the mermaid crowns are sold out on Chelsea's Etsy shop, but she did say on Instagram that she will be "posting heaps more on THURSDAY and MONDAY. Then two drops a week from there on in!"

In the meantime, you can check out more of her stunning creations below and figure out which one you will be wearing.

Gorgeous, right?

Our only question is, will Snapchat be making a mermaid crown filter? (With permission, of course.)
