Canada's Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk into the round of 16 in beach volleyball

RIO DE JANEIRO — Canadian beach volleyball duo Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk are through to the Round of 16 at the Rio Olympics.

Saxton, from Calgary, and Schalk, from Red Deer, Alta., defeated Poland 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) in the lucky loser match on Thursday evening to advance into the playoff rounds. They'll next face the Netherlands.

John Binstock and Sam Schachter, both from Richmond Hill, Ont., were eliminated from the tournament.

On the women's side, Toronto's Kristina Valjas and Victoria's Jamie Broder won 21-12, 21-16 over Nada Meawad and Doaa Elghobashy of Egypt.

Also, Heather Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., and Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., remained undefeated in their final preliminary round match after a 2-0 win over Germans Karla Borger and Britta Buthe.

The Canadians won the match 21-19, 21-15 to finish pool play with a 3-0 record.

Valjas and Broder will play Bansley and Pavan in the Round of 16.
