Nicole Kidman Adoption: Star Gets Personal At TIFF

"I have adopted children and so this is sort of a love letter to them."

Actress Nicole Kidman is starring in the new film "Lion," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend.

The flick, that also stars Dev Patel and Rooney Mara, tells the true-life story of an Australian couple who adopts a 5-year-old child, Saroo, after he was separated from his biological family in India.

Kidman, who plays Sue Brierley, the woman who adopts the child, said her role hit very close to home as she has two adopted kids of her own with former husband Tom Cruise.

"For me, this is a film about the power of mothers, whichever form they come in, whether biological or adoptive," the actress shared, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "When you have good love like that, you flourish. However it comes your way, it comes. So it's obviously emotional for me."

She later told etalk, "I have adopted children and so this is sort of a love letter to them and at the same time for all ... you have the need to have mothers, whether they're biological -- in any form, good love, nurturing, nourishing love is so good for any human being."

While Kidman and Cruise ended their marriage in 2001, the now 49-year-old got a second chance at love when she married country musician Keith Urban in 2006. The pair have two children together, Faith and Sunday.
