Drone Captures Incredible Encounter With Humpback Whales

"The whales were so close you could touch them."

Nova Scotia whale watchers were given quite a show by curious humpback whales earlier this month — delighting viewers with an unforgettable hour-long visit.

Photographer Gary Brinton chartered a tour with Mariner Cruises to celebrate his fourth wedding anniversary with his wife just off Brier Island. And in a move that may raise eyebrows to some, Brinton decided to pack along a drone to snap footage overhead.

The images and videos he shot from the boat with his regular camera are nothing short of remarkable. Brinton captured the humpbacks gracefully circling the vessel, gently diving under it, before playfully rising to the water’s surface as if to say hello.

It wasn’t until he got home and downloaded the video when he realized just how incredible the moment was from afar.

“The whales were so close you could touch them,” he wrote in a blog entry about the intimate encounter.
