Heralded filly Tepin captures $1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile horse race

TORONTO — Heralded filly Tepin lived up the hype Saturday in the $1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile.

The 2-5 favourite topped the eight-horse field unofficially in one minute 34.13 seconds on a good turf for an eighth straight win in her Canadian debut. While it rained most of the day, the sun and a rainbow appeared as Tepin and the other horses made their way to the track.

Tepin, North America's reigning champion turf female, also earned trainer Mark Casse, recently inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, his first Mile victory.

Tepin captured the $600,000 winner's share and clinched a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Mile on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. She's the defending race champion, winning it last year at Keeneland.

Tower of Texas was second ahead of Mutafayyek.

Earlier, 5/1 pick The Pizza Man rallied to win the Grade 1 $300,000 Northern Dancer, a 1 1/2-mile turf event for three-year-olds and up. Wake Forest, also at 5/1 odds, was second ahead of 5/2 favourite World Approval.
