Saskatchewan Gov't Needs To Release 1st-Quarter Budget Update: Opposition

REGINA — The Opposition says the Saskatchewan government is hiding the true state of the province's finances by not releasing a first-quarter financial update.

NDP Leader Trent Wotherspoon says in a letter to Premier Brad Wall that eight consecutive finance ministers have released first- quarter updates before the end of August.

Wotherspoon calls on Wall to release the numbers, because people deserve transparency.

There's usually a financial update around the end of August, but the government says in an email that there wasn't enough time this year because the budget was tabled in June instead of March.

The email says the budget passed and the first quarter ended at the same time, but it adds there will be a mid-year update this fall as usual.

The NDP says the government didn't release the budget in March because it wanted to conceal its plans from voters ahead of the April provincial election.
