North American stock markets head lower; loonie dips as week draws to a close

TORONTO — Major North American stock indexes are moderately lower this morning

At the Toronto Stock Exchange, the S&P/TSX composite index fell 33.43 points to 14,562.07 after nearly two hours of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 34.38 points at 18,234.12, the broader S&P 500 composite index dropped 5.90 points to 2,154.87 and the Nasdaq composite lost 11.68 points to 5,295.17.

The Canadian dollar was at 75.49 cents US, down 0.19 of a cent from Thursday's close.

The November crude contract fell 14 cents to US$50.30 per barrel and November natural gas was up seven cents to US$3.12 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract rose $5.90 to $1,258.90 an ounce and December copper contracts rose two cents to US$2.18 a pound.
