School Lunches: Heartbreaking Reason Boy Asks Mom To Pack Two

"I'm so proud of my son's heart!"

When Josette Duran’s son, Dylan, originally asked her to pack him two lunches for school, she thought he wasn’t getting enough to eat. But when she asked her son, she found out the heartbreaking truth.

“He said, ‘No mom, it’s for this little boy at school and he sits by himself and all he eats is a fruit cup,’” Duran explained to KOAT.

Proud of her son’s kind heart, the New Mexico mom posted their conversation on Facebook:

It wasn’t until later that Duran found out that the mom of the boy without a lunch had recently lost her job and couldn’t afford to pay for her son's school lunches. As a result, Duran has been packing two lunches for her son Dylan and the unnamed boy every day since the beginning of the year.

Watch the video above to hear how the mother of the anonymous boy reacted after she found out Duran was feeding her son.

On Tuesday, Duran’s story made it to the front news page of Reddit. In the comments, many were touched by Duran’s sweet gesture and even shared similar stories of their own.

“I did this every day,” one wrote. “I actually asked my mom to pack 3 snacks (since lunch was provided by the school), for a couple of my friends who I saw were not eating anything at snack time.”

Another admitted: “I did this in high school, where a girl who sat at my lunch table never brought lunch (lived with single mother who didnt make much money), so I'd make two sandwiches for lunch and give her one.”

Interestingly, a few Redditors also noted that many schools have a strict “no sharing food” policy and admitted they were surprised that Duran’s son’s school allowed her to make another boy's lunch.

Another added: “I was doing the same thing for one of the kids in my son’s school till they found out. I was sending him in with two Lunchs (sic) and snacks and was sent a letter home from the school telling me to stop. That my son could get in trouble.”

Luckily, Duran was not penalized for her kind gesture.
