Alex Elle, Writer, Teaches Bullied Daughter Beautiful Lesson In Self-Love

"Black and proud. All ways, always."

The concept of colourism is an issue that deeply affects the black community — and unfortunately, not even children are exempt from its ugly wrath.

On Saturday, writer Alex Elle shared a touching video on Twitter of her daughter reciting positive affirmations to herself after she was teased by other children for her skin tone.

"After being bullied on the bus this week about her skin colour, I decided a self-love exercise was needed," the tweet read. "Black and proud. All ways, always."

The post quickly went viral, and is currently sitting at over 100,000 retweets and 180,000 likes.

Many Twitter users were touched by the video, and left encouraging replies like, "This is so beautiful that I started crying. It's unbelievable how people want us to hate ourselves. Thank you for posting this," and "Yes. This is necessary and beautiful."

Elle also posted the video to her Instagram page and explained the exercise in further detail.

"The other day on the bus, my kiddo was being teased about her dark brown skin," the caption read. "It wasn't the first time and it won't be the last. This morning we did a little self-love exercise. I wrote some positive things on sticky notes and had her stick them to her mirror one at a time while reading them and saying 'I am.'"

She continued, "My daughter is sensitive and I love that about her. As we raise her, we are doing our absolute best to make sure that her sensitivity is matched with confidence and self-pride. I didn't have anyone doing this with me when I was growing up—and I hope it makes a difference as she goes through things that may be hurtful, difficult, and uncomfortable. Our children are our reflection. We must do our best to demonstrate greatness and show up for them."

Illustrator Sharee Miller was so touched by the video, she even created a beautiful sketch of Elle's daughter.

We hope this vibrant young lady will always know how truly beautiful she really is, despite what any bully has to say.
