Tommy Hilfiger wants the fashion community to not "become political" dressing future first lady Melania Trump.
On Monday, the 65-year-old American designer attended the Angel Ball in New York City, and when asked what he thought of many designers' refusals to dress Trump, he spoke highly of the former model.
"I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her," Hilfiger said to WWD.
"Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania."
This endorsement comes after designer Sophie Theallet revealed last week that she would not dress Trump and encouraged fellow designers to follow her lead.
"As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady," Theallet, who often dressed first lady Michelle Obama, wrote in a statement.
"The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by.”
During the election campaign, Hillary Clinton was highly endorsed by the fashion community, from Vogue to The New Yorker.
But with Donald Trump now in as the president-elect, most of the industry is refusing to comment if they will eventually design outfits for his family.
Designer Carolina Herrera told Business of Fashion last week, "I think that in two or three months [designers will] reach out, because it’s fashion. You’ll see everyone dressing Melania. She’s representing the United States."
As Hilfiger becomes the first person to be vocal on dressing the new FLOTUS, it looks like we may have just have to wait to see what Melania wears to her husband's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2017.
