Sexist Billboard Proclaims That 'Real Men Provide, Real Women Appreciate It'

No thanks

It's 2017, and a sexist billboard placed along the Winston-Salem highway in North Carolina is on full display.

Proclaiming, "Real men provide, real women appreciate it" the ad is causing quite a stir — so much so that a protest has been organized for Sunday to take it down.

"We are NOT protesting that the sign is capable of existing, or the people who put it up, or the ad agency, or the right to put it up," the Facebook event description read.

"We are protesting patriarchy and sexism, and that this antiquated way of thinking about women exists at all. We are protesting the implied demand that women be silent and appreciate, regardless of whatever circumstances, their role as non-providers."

The billboard itself, however, is owned by Whiteheart Outdoor Advertising. The company's president Bill Whiteheart said the company does not necessarily share those views.

"The message is a paid message," he told Triad City Beat on Tuesday. "We understand very well, I’m sure as you do, the Constitution of the United States, and it is a 'freedom of speech'-type message where the parties that have paid for that advertising are conveying a heartfelt message to the public."

And while there's nothing wrong with a man providing for a female partner, perpetuating the stereotype that women are subservient to men is definitely not OK.
