Saskatoon break-in call ends with police tasering man

Police officers deployed a taser on a man who said he had "committed self-harm" after locking himself in the bathroom of a residence he had allegedly broken into.

The Saskatoon Police Service said it was dispatched to the 1900 block of 22nd Street W. around 3:30 a.m. CST Sunday. Someone had reported break-in in progress.

The man had already barricaded himself in the bathroom by the time officers arrived and began negotiating with him.

Police say the man attempted to spray bleach at the officers before threatening to light fire to the building.

According to a news release, police believed the man had access to an "edged weapon" and he said he had hurt himself and was bleeding.

When the man became unresponsive, the officers "forced entry" into the bathroom. That's when police say the man lunged at officers.

The man, 23, was tased and taken into custody. He was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in police custody.

He faces charges including break and enter and mischief.
