A police operation is underway near Square-Victoria in Old Montreal, where a man armed with a knife in a parked car threatened officers who approached him.
Police have cordoned off the area surrounding the vehicle, parked in a lot at the corner of St-Jacques and Gauvin streets.
Police have closed the following streets to traffic:
- Robert-Bourassa Boulevard in both directions, between St-Antoine West and Notre-Dame streets.
- St-Jacques Street from Square-Victoria to Robert-Bourassa Boulevard.
- Notre-Dame Street between Robert-Bourassa Boulevard and Gauvin Street.
Around 20 squad cars and 40 police officers are at the scene, and police have sealed off St-Jacques Street at the southern end of the Square-Victoria.
A police tactical response team is involved.
Police were escorting workers exiting nearby office buildings to ensure their safety.
Anyone with a car parked inside the police perimeter will have to wait until the operation is over to retrieve their vehicle, police said.
The shuttle to the Montreal Alouettes football game is bypassing Square-Victoria station. Football fans looking for the shuttle will have to go to the McGill Metro station.
