Pattullo Bridge to be closed all weekend for repairs

The Pattullo Bridge will be completely closed to vehicle traffic this weekend to allow crews to repair damage from the winter.

The bridge, which links the Lower Mainland cities of New Westminster and Surrey across the Fraser River, will close on Friday, July 14, at 9 p.m. and will reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 17.

The bridge will still be open to pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles.

The 80-year-old bridge is owned and operated by TransLink, which says the bridge is 30 years past its useful lifespan and has made numerous calls for its replacement in recent years.

TransLink says it has spent $50 million since 1999 keeping the bridge functional past its expected end of life.

In September 2016, a TransLink report found the bridge could be vulnerable to a major wind or seismic event due to its outdated construction, and urged the closing of the bridge no later than 2024.

A replacement bridge is currently in the planning stages, with TransLink expecting construction to begin in 2019.
