Federal NDP leader urges provinces to build sustainable economies

SASKATOON — New federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says provinces should focus on economies based on sustainability rather than commodities.

Singh, who has spoken against proposed oil pipelines, was in Saskatoon for the first time since his leadership win earlier this month.

He says an economy based on commodity prices will always face booms and busts, which in turn lead to ups and downs for the province.

One way Singh proposes to create a sustainable economy is to build a national electricity grid that would take renewable energy surpluses and spread them around the country.
