Treat your voice as a muscle and remember that like all muscles, it gets stronger with use. Many of us stopped using our voice honestly and boldly when we were girls and were taught, as part of our socialization, to say and do what would most please others. Start small by practicing with those who will love you no matter what comes out of your mouth.

The reality is that our menstrual cycle is extremely powerful and does impact the way we feel from one day to the next. It's also true that we have heightened strengths during every phase of our cycle. Unfortunately, most of us don't know about the intricacies of our cycle and how to really capitalize on these strengths because from the time we hit puberty we're given very little information about it. International Women's Day is all about pausing to reflect on our achievements in the long-standing effort to create equality between men and women. For over a decade, Beyonce has been singing about girls and women being independent. However, when I found out last month that the megastar and girl power proponent was calling her tour the '<em>Mrs. Carter Show</em>' I thought I was going to short circuit.

2012 has proven to be an incredibly exciting and important time to be a woman. One especially important sign of this is the fact that we are re-discovering and using our voices. Now here's where our important work for 2013 comes in. All this ground-breaking awareness, strength and self-authority among women and girls must be protected and nurtured so it continues to grow.
