Here's the thing: style is completely subjective. It's also ever changing. Yes there are (so-called) rules and guidelines, do's and don'ts, ins and outs, but style itself is, or should be, a personal, individual thing -- an expression of and extension of the self.

When I downsized into my condo and found myself with one garment rack and one dresser to store my clothing, I realized that some things would have to go. I also realized that I really didn't wear most of my clothes. I just kept cycling through my favorites. I've heard it said that we typically wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time. So why bother hanging on to one-off's, unworn, or unloved pieces that take up valuable storage space?

Layering can be as simple as throwing on a cardigan or a long sleeve shirt over your outfit when it's cool and then taking it off or tying it around your waist or hips when it warms up. Or it can be adding another topper like a vest and then throwing a blazer or jacket (bomber and varsity are big for Fall) on top of that. All depends on the thermometer and what look you're going for.

When it comes to creating outfits, the key words here are layering and accessorizing. Many women feel that their outfits are incomplete because they don't take this final step. Think of it this way -- putting clothes on and being dressed is like a simple, plain cake. Layering and accessorizing are the icing and decorations. Sure the plain cake will do, but how much better will the fully iced and decorated one look?

When you know how to dress for your shape, you know how to play up your assets and downplay the areas of your body that you don't necessarily want to draw attention to. You know how to highlight certain parts, de-emphasize others and fool the eye into believing that you are the epitome of proportion and balance.

very once in a while, life knocks us down. Like it's trying to show us who's boss. One of the biggest blows I've ever encountered was my divorce. Now I'm no therapist, but I do know that when you look good, you feel good -- and feeling good, in my books, is exactly what you need when life deals its blows.

We all know that when you take care of yourself first, you're better able to take care of those around you. Besides, who doesn't like a little spoiling every now and then. Whether soaking in a bath, hitting the spa or indulging in your favourite meal is your idea of a little self love, as a personal stylist, mine always involve clothing.

The great debate continues -- to hose or not to hose. In the winter, that really is the question. It's interesting that when it comes to pantyhose (or nylons), stockings (thigh high) and tights, both men and women seem to have an opinion. They're either for or against.

I love me a sharp-dressed man. All you have to do is look at a man in a custom-tailored suit to know that when it comes to dressing well, we women don't have a monopoly. In fact, we could even learn a thing or two from our male counterparts.

While shopping to create and add to this perfectly curated wardrobe might be a casual pastime to some, to me, it's serious business. Shopping with a plan always starts before you leave the house, mainly in your closet. That's where you want to take stock of your wardrobe to see what you have and what you're missing.

Being clear on my style, knowing how to put things together and shopping smart keeps my wardrobe super lean. If you're looking to create a clean, solid, functional yet fabulous wardrobe and want to make the most of every item of clothing you own, here are three things that should help maximize your wardrobe. And your dollar.

Canada is home to a number of extremely talented Independent Fashion Designers who, for lack of exposure in mainstream malls, have their talents hidden from most of us. Yet all you have to do is browse through local boutiques to find that many of them stock their pieces.

If it were up to me, the only place I'd have hair on my body is on my head and my eyebrows. The rest could just disappear forever, never to be seen again. Unfortunately that's not the case and I, like many women, spend countless hours shaving, waxing, plucking and enduring ridiculous amounts of pain, removing unwanted hair.

I've always dreamed of having long, thick, luscious hair. The reality is that mine is, and has always been, very thin and fine -- and the aging process sure isn't helping. But there are so many hair extension options available, that the real dilemma becomes: Commit? Don't commit? Volume, length or both?

When I stumbled upon Hatitude Canada on Instagram, and saw Amparo's amazing creations, I knew I had to reach out. What I didn't realize was that in just a few weeks I would have, not only a hat to fit my itty, bitty head, but one that was custom designed down to the very last detail.

I heard about dress rentals when I started styling clients for their photo shoots. Renting a dress allows you to go to one location, try on a ton of dresses in a variety of styles and colours to see which is best for you (typically with an experienced stylist on hand to guide you).

Looking overtly sexy is pretty easy. Throw on some tight, skimpy clothes, expose a ton of skin and you're good to go. Being subtly sexy however, can take a little more thought and effort. This Valentine's Day, if subtle sexiness is the look you're going for, here are 10 ways to achieve it.

2014 was a tough year for many of my clients, myself included. Of course, being a stylist, the very first thing I did was go through my closet. If I've learned anything from my work, it's that when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good.

This year, why not choose an LBD with a little somethin' somethin'. Perhaps it has a plunging neckline, or a cut-out or two. Maybe it's strapless, has a high slit or has only one shoulder. Or maybe, like mine, it exposes a bit of your back. Whichever you decide to wear, make sure the occasion calls for it and that you're not exposing more of yourself than you should.
