Bill Haines is an avid reader, blogger and writer who lives in Edmonton, Alberta. Premise: If God had not intervened there would be no nation of Israel, or 10 commandments or Handel's Messiah. We are privileged to watch Israel, help Israel and learn from God. (OK, it's just a premise folks, requiring more evidence, I don't have any direct line to God.)
You Know, about the Middle East,

You Know, about the Middle East, "In Harper's Words..."

It is great, at least on this one issue, to be able to echo the words of the Prime Minister of your country, and not have to "reinvent the wheel" because some politicians won't talk straight about Middle East violence.

Coke and the Finland Baby Gift Box

"For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed."

Bob Dylan and Forever Young

Dylan is one of my heroes, and not all of my heroes are Christians; but they all inspire us with the breathtaking beauty of this world and the hope that we can overcome its tragedies, past, present and future.

Safe House and

Safe House and Prostitution

I think a good Christian response to this situation would be for Christian churches to build safe houses across the street from the new brothels so that any woman who wants help escaping the sex trade and human sex trafficking, can receive the immediate love and care and assistance, she needs.

What most young people might not catch right away, because their knowledge of history is now only developing, is that our world had at one time, degenerated to such a state...

Christmas Lights

Everyone enjoys Christmas lights and Christmas carols. But what would be a nice message to people who do not know much about the Bible or believe it? I think it would be to say to all the shoppers in the malls, that they are, themselves, "Christmas lights," lights against the darkness.

The Big History Project

Can we encourage students to be more enthusiastic about learning history? I think so, and so does Bill Gates of Microsoft fame. Gates has sponsored The Big History Project. -A free on line course for high school students, where Mr. Gates appears in the opening syllabus video, endorsing the course's unique way of blending science and history to give students the big picture.

#SWOP2013 - Helping the Third World and Ourselves

#SWOP2013 stands for State of the World Population, a UN report that focuses on the mistreatment of young girls in the Third World as forced child brides. And somehow MP #nikiashton and the #ndp are turning this into a demand for Canada to fund abortion clinics in the Third World. OK, I have a different viewpoint and I tweet a lot. For what it is worth, here are a few.

Global Warming: Can we Solve This and Move on?

I have "bristled" at the inappropriate use, on this issue, of "denier" language before, and so I won't belabour the point again. But I will say Sandford's use of the phrase "researchers are bound by the scientific method to invert the entire established knowledge infrastructure on this planet to see to if any given challenge deserves consideration" is obvious hyperbole.

Whose Moral Compass To Follow When It Comes To

Whose Moral Compass To Follow When It Comes To Sex-Ed?

What Paula Simons doesn't appear to understand is that there is more chance of teaching kids, with enthusiasm, that sex is best saved for marriage so that as much as possible, children can be conceived in a loving home environment, from a Christian-based organization than from a Planned Parenthood-based organization.

"Science Is Not Your Ememy", Steven Pinker

Here is a link to Harvard University Psychology Professor Steven Pinker's now "infamous" essay in the New Republic titled "Science Is Not Your Enemy." "Geeze, who in their right mind would think that science is their enemy?" Memo to self, "Write an essay some day called "The Christian faith is not your enemy."

The Alpha Course - Christianity's Biggest Success

"British Christianity's biggest success story" is what reporter Matthew Bell calls Anglican Minister Nicky Gumbel's Alpha Course, which has been attended by millions of people world wide. The Alpha course is a remarkable phenomena, for a lot of reasons.

Syrian Refugees, Invite Them to Canada

As the debate rages over the R2P (Responsibility to Protect) and the possibility of US military intervention in Syria to punish the Assad regime and his Iranian supported Hezbollah fighters for the use of chemical weapons, against ethnic minorities, there exists one thing we can do today to really help.

Like millions of other people, I watched the Fox News interview with Reza, and I found him to be a very likeable guy, writing sincerely his "take" on Jesus. But if you get a chance this summer, why not balance Reza's "liberal" take on the life of Christ with C.S. Lewis's conservative "take." And to help with this here is my book review of Lewis' famous book, "Mere Christianity."

Putin's Anti-Gay Agenda is Scary

In Canada, the vast majority of religious people and secular people support the principle that we should show great love and respect to all people, no matter race, creed, colour or sexual orientation. This is as much a part of our Canadian way of life as "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." is a part of the American way of life.

Apple iTunes Doesn't Sell Porn, And Neither Should Shaw

We can have freedom of speech and still have a family friendly society by realizing that freedom of speech never meant freedom of pictures that betray the goodness of women and children. We would not need government internet filtering, like is proposed now in England.

A New Holiday For Alberta

What made me really mad and sad was, not whether the Alberta PCs or the Wildrose won or lost, but that these political dirty tricksters were willing to discredit and make fun of, in the eyes of the young people of Alberta, the "whole Christian faith", "Lake of Fire" T-shirts and all, for the sake of political gain.
