Detaining Asylum Seekers Won't Solve the Refugee Crisis

In November, hotspots will accommodate people until a refugee status decision can be made "quickly." There is a parallel aim of repatriating those whose asylum claims are refused. The hotspots are not a solution to the influx of people, the criminalization of their migrations, or the eroding solidarity amongst EU member states. In fact, all they can provide is a stopgap measure.

North Korea Is Testing China's Patience

All eyes would be on Beijing. North Korea's frequent provocations to help secure political concessions, and often financial and food aid too, are no longer having the effect they used to. Having all been burnt once too often in the past, Seoul, Tokyo and Washington are not in mood to play such games. And crucially for Pyongyang, neither, it seems, is Beijing.

How the UN Can Help Create Peace in a Divided World

Canada Would Be Foolish Not to Join the TPP

This week, it was announced that an agreement on the TPP had been reached, although few details were forthcoming. For more than 10 years, experts on North American economic integration have been calling for a deepening of the NAFTA. The TPP offers such an opportunity. Canada would be foolish to miss it.
