Georges Laraque

Deputy leader, Green Party of Canada

Georges Laraque is 12-year veteran of the NHL, where he was one of the most feared players in the league. Named the number one enforcer by Sports Illustrated in 2008, Georges may be a menace on the ice, but off the ice, he is anything but.

A native of Montreal with Hatian roots, Georges was drafted Edmonton Oilers in 1997 and finished his career with the Montreal Canadiens. Georges retired from the NHL in 2010 to focus on community involvement and humanitarian efforts.

Georges has worked to rebuild the Grace Children's Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which was decimated by the tragic earthquake. He learned to figure skate while competing in CBC’s Battle of the Blades reality show last year, and has since skated in dozens of shows at figure skating clubs in Quebec in an effort to break stereotypes.

A huge supporter of environmental causes, Georges is involved in Terrasphere, a vertical farming movement. He is also a spokesperson for PETA, and the co-owner of two raw vegan restaurants -- Crudessence -- in Montreal. He is also the president of Super-Glide Canada, a synthetic ice distributor. Last year, Georges was named deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada.

Sealing on Thin Ice

No professional hockey player likes the sight of blood on the ice -- it's a stark reminder that a career ending injury is just a senseless illegal hook away. That's why the hook on a sealer's club makes me scratch my head.
