Heidi Ann Smith is a creative writer and researcher, whose expertise lies in the practice of creative writing. She defines this practice as an investigation. While The Clara Ann Burns Story is based on her life and experiences, her aim was not simply to relay a set of events by following a pre-established system, but rather to engage in an experience on a sensory level through the writing. Smith has been happily married for over thirty years and has five grown children. She returned to college when her youngest son started school, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Illinois University, Master of Humanities from California State University, and a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Middlesex University, and splits her time between the United States and London. I was born with a cleft-lip, endured a series of serious illnesses and prolonged abuse. My father was an alcoholic who had heart disease. He died when I was nine years old. Thankfully early on I discovered writing and reading. It provided me with a reprieve from my troubled thoughts and a means of expression that extends beyond superficial appearances.
