Former Prime Minister of Iceland
Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir is the former Prime Minister of Iceland and her wife Jónína Leósdóttir is an Icelandic novelist, playwright and journalist. Originally a flight attendant and union organizer, Jóhanna was first elected to parliament in 1978 and was Prime Minister from 2007 to 2009. She was the first openly gay or lesbian head of goverment in the world. Jónína remains the only person in the world to have been the same-sex spouse of a sitting head of government.
My wife, Jónína, and I are proud to have been asked to participate in WorldPride 2014 by sharing our views and our own personal story. Jónína and I have reason to be thankful. But our joy is mixed with sadness. For it is difficult to enjoy a life of freedom, tolerance and full human rights while hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of our brothers and sisters in other countries have to fear for their lives every single day.
