Music Diaries: "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth"

I was looking out into the dark room and felt a chill go up my spine. "The first fruits of them that sleep." And as I felt the awareness, sweetness and sturdy-heartedness of the audience, I realized that the song was (for me) about all of us "waking up" from the long, dark, suffering-inducing sleep of "unconsciousness."

How to Break Up on Valentine's Day

The Music Diaries: "Half Angel Half Eagle"

Someone's mother falls to the sidewalk; on the next street someone looks up. In the cathedral, a burst of laughter; in another city the pigeons fly up and scatter. Someone put down in a New York subway a newspaper picked up in Australia. For each event, the inarticulate glory, the equal and opposite, will tell the story.

The Empty

The Empty City

The outline of the city the sheerness of its height, I thought that I was kidding when I said I love this sight. I love this skyline, towers rising from the trees, white bars on a blue graph not exactly flapping in the breeze.

The Music Diaries: The Goal of Harmony

Since I am about to release a new CD, a glimpse behind the scenes might be of interest. The few times I have done this on my website, I have been surprised at how much people enjoy hearing about the "process."

Thank You for Caring About Us, Michael Schmidt

We live in a world where the laws are getting so tight that management has changed to micro-management to quantum-management to paralysis. The farmer who is not allowed to butcher his own meat for health regulations and then reads about abattoirs being fined for unsanitary conditions.

A Musician's Journey Into the New Millenium

If you ask someone if they like music, they look at you strangely. It seems to be a universal given. Like asking someone if they like breathing. Can you imagine a world with no music? How quiet it would be? How hard it would be to celebrate? How difficult to fight gravity? How impossible to dance?

Triangles and the

Triangles and the "Real Thing"

Denis is a bona fide shepherd. His life revolves around three things: sheep, dogs and family. The family phone is always ringing with people asking for his help. Though he is a true teacher, it is easy to imagine that he is just as happy being completely alone, on the moors, in the forests, not explaining anything.

Shepherds and the

Shepherds and the Faithful

Everything in my life for the past six years has been about lightening my trappings, unmassing what I had amassed. So, imagine my consternation finding myself with a puppy snuggled into my touring coat, deep in the Welsh countryside. Magic had prevailed in spite of my muscular disassembling mechanism.
